What Is a Drip Edge and Why Does My Roof Need One?

It’s no secret that there are lots of components that contribute to a strong and functional roof. While many focus on material selections or additions, there’s one element that often gets overlooked; the drip edge.

So, What Exactly Is a Drip Edge?

Drip edges are strips of metal flashing that run along the edges of your roof. In most cases, they can be found above the fascia. Now that you know what a drip edge is, let’s examine how these mighty strips help protect your roof all year long.

Why Drip Edges Matter

Designed to be waterproof, drip edges prevent runoff and other types of moisture from seeping down into your fascia, soffit, shingles, and walls. In fact, the
EPA considers it a top method for maintaining water-tightness in residential homes.

If drip edges fail to do their job, moisture buildup can cause your fascia board and roof decking to rot. You may not see this happening, as several of these components are hidden, but if years go by and your drip edge is not working, you may end up with:

  • Mold and mildew – May trigger health problems and unpleasant odors
  • Weakened structures – Compromise the safety and stability of your home
  • Damaged shingles – Reduce protection from weather and can lead to leaks

Are Drip Edges Necessary?

Yes, under most municipal codes, drip edges are required for modern homes. Moreover, they are required to be installed correctly, so it’s crucial to hire a licensed contractor who knows what they’re doing. To protect your home, it must be measured, cut, and properly installed to fit your roof. Additionally, proper underlayment must also be installed over the drip edge and along your roof’s eaves, to ensure water does not seep into your roofing system.

Instances Where Drip Edges Aren’t Required

Although rare, there are circumstances where a drip edge is not required. For instance, if you have pre-bent aluminum fascia that flushes with your roof’s decking, that would technically count as a drip edge without you having to install any extra parts. There’s also something known as “rake molding,” which serves as a drip edge for homes that were built before aluminum fascia became the norm in modern roofing.

It’s important to note, however, that aluminum fascia and rake molding must also be installed along the eaves and cover the edge of your roof’s deck to prevent water from damaging your roof. Bottom line: your roof needs to either have a drip edge, pre-bent aluminum fascia, or rake molding If it doesn’t, you need to have them installed immediately.

Maintaining and Inspecting Your Drip Edges

While they’re relatively low-maintenance, drip edges still require regular cleanings to function properly. Clearing out any debris that traps moisture will help prevent damage to the drip edges. Some examples include leaves, dirt, and ice buildup, which can accumulate over time.

While cleaning is important, regular inspections will always be your best defense against drip edge problems. Just taking the time to carefully look for issues like lifting, shifts in alignment, detached panels, and rust will help you spot minor issues before they turn into costly damage.

While homeowners can check their drip edges, we recommend having a professional roofer come inspect your roof. Roofs can be tricky to navigate and you could seriously hurt yourself if you’re not used to walking along roofs. Plus, roofers have the tools and knowledge needed to identify any underlying issues. To protect yourself and your roof, it's best to hire a licensed professional.
